Dear Junebug

The teacher said "ball change cross right, ball change cross left" and Junebug not knowing what a "ball change" was or her left from her right  (she could never remember if her freckle was on her right hand or left), tapped her way awkwardly across the dance floor as the tears welled up in her eyes and out the door never to return. (from Big Dreams blog)

She always wanted to do the right thing

But she couldn’t always remember her left from her right

She knew did not want to be left

ALONE

She knew her dad was left-handed

She had a freckle on her left hand

Or maybe the freckle was on her right hand?

It was so easy to doubt herself

OVER AND OVER AGAIN

She felt embarrassed often

She worried others would see

It’s hard if you don’t know your left from your right

Ball change cross right, ball change cross left

TAP TAP TAP

She felt she was doing it all wrong

She would do anything to make it right

THE TEARS WELLED UP IN HER EYES

If she had more left at the end of a day

Or if she had leftovers from dinner last night

Or if she found a left-handed journal like she always wanted to buy Jay

Or if she would never doubt that yes, definitely her freckle is on her left hand

ALL THE WAY OUT THE DOOR NEVER TO RETURN

Dear Junebug,

What’s right is what’s right for you.

What’s left is anything you have extra to give.

Some days there will be a lot left.

Some days there will be a little left.

Some days there will be none left at all.

Whose left at the end of a day will be the right people for you.

Love, Me
